STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE: MEDIA ALERT: SA HOSTS RSA/MOZAMBIQUE JOINT PERMANENT COMMISSION ON DEFENCE AND SECURITY (JPCDS)

Date of Release: 27 November 2008

In light of the forthcoming 2009 FIFA Confederation Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament, security issues affecting South Africa and Mozambique will be high on the agenda during the inaugural meeting of South Africa/Mozambique Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security. These include border crime such as human trafficking, gun running and drug trafficking.
Matters pertaining to a joint naval and air patrol within South African and Mozambican territorial waters, will also be discussed. This is due to international sea vessels rerouting to use the two countries’ waters in the light of the high rate of piracy activities in the horn of Africa.

The Minister of Defence, Mr Charles Nqakula will tomorrow (Friday 28 November 2008) lead a South African delegation to the Ministerial Session of the inaugural RSA/ Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS). The South African delegation of ministers will include, the Minister for Intelligence, Honourable Dr. Siyabonga Cwele, the Minister of Home Affairs, Honourable Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Honourable Deputy Minister Lorretta Jacobus.
