SA Navy fleet deploys to Mozambique for joint Southern African Development Community *(SADC) Military Exercises: 22-28 August 2010

Date of release 18 August 2010

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will deploy to Mozambique as part of an initiative to maintain strong diplomatic and military relations between the two countries.

As part of the joint international military operations, the SANDF will deploy the frigate SAS SPIOENKOP, elements of the Navy Divers, Maritime Reaction Squadron, a combat support vessel, SAS DRAKENSBERG and elements from the South Air Force and South African Medical Health Services. The Mozambique Navy will deploy elements of the marines alongside their South African counterparts.

The deployment will also coincide with the 15th meeting of the Southern African Development Community Standing Maritime Committee (SMC), which will be hosted by Mozambique in the capital Maputo in the month of August.

During the voyage, the two Navies will also conduct joint patrols and training exercises along the South African and Mozambique coasts. Once in Maputo, on 27 August, there will be a demonstration to showcase the SADC military forces capabilities. In addition, the SMC will commence with heads of SADC Navies and Maritime Wing Commanders, discussing a number of maritime related issues.

Ends.
