MEDIA RELEASE BY DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE: SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE (SANDF) FLIES TWO GAUTENG MECs TO FLOOD-RAVAGED AREAS IN AND AROUND GAUTENG PROVINCE

Following their search and rescue of the flood victims in and around Northern Cape last week, the SANDF has today deployed an Oryx helicopter from the South African Air Force to fly the MEC for Health and Social Development as well as the MEC for Local Government and Housing in Gauteng, to visit the flood-stricken areas in and around Gauteng Province.

The two MECs are to visit some of the worst hit areas to inspect the impact of floods that include Klipspruit River in Soweto, Ivory Park in Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng in the Vaal, Mamelodi East Extension four and Centurion. Gauteng has since been critically affected by severe floods resulting in damage to property, infrastructure of the environment and disruption of the lives of communities.
