MEDIA RELEASE BY DEPARTMENT  OF DEFENCE: THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE (SANDF) REPATRIATES THE MORTAL REMAINS OF THE LATE MALAWIAN PRESIDENT

Government has directed that, On Saturday 14 April 2012, at 10h00 in the morning, the SANDF will transport the remains of the former president of Malawi (President Bingu wa Mutharika) to his home country wherein family members of the deceased will be accompanying the coffin of the former president. A small ceremony will be held to bid farewell to the late president, the ceremony is scheduled as follows.

  • Arrival of the coffin at Air Force Base Waterkloof
  • Transfer of the coffin from the hearse to the aircraft.
  • Final acknowledgement of the departure of the deceased. There will be a number of family and officials departing in the same aircraft.

The former president will be accorded the farewell ceremony befitting his stature, this is but one of the contributions that South Africa ensures a better Africa and a better world as a result of her contributions to global relations.
