Work of the Defence Review opened to the public

on 12 April 2012 Chairperson of the Defence Review Committee Mr Roelf Meyer handed over the fifth phase of the progress report to Minister Lindiwe Sisulu which he also called the consultative draft 2012 at the CSIR Convention Cente Pretoria.

Members of the media engaged with the minister and the defence review committee on the progress made thus far. The Minister of Defence Ms Lindiwe introduced the Chairperson of the Defence Review Committee, Mr Roelf Meyer who was former minister of the Department of Defence,” we are excited to present this 420 page document to minister Sisulu and proud of the work produced which will bring light to the final product. This is a long report which took 14 years to review and it will also give a guidelines for the next 30 years to come.” Said Mr Meyer.

Meyer continued to say it is important that the defence review by reviewed so to fit it into today’s developmental state. The defence review committee also plans to present the review in three categories by means of Izimbizo’s in all nine provinces to allow members of the public to engage with them, the starting point will be in KwaZulu Natal on the 21 April 2012 and will be communicating on the social media e.g facebook and twitter to allow platform across generational barriers to engage and key stakeholders, including the defence force partners and communities will be consulted.

Minister Sisulu echoed the message that this defence review is for everyone and people should be at liberty to engage in it. She called in for partnership with the media to join hands and educate the broader public about the role of the Defence Force. “People should familiarise themselves with the review which is on the website so that we educate and engage in meaningful debates on defence issues,” said Defence Minister Sisulu. However this still to be approved in parliament and we will be presenting our first step on 18 April 2012 to parliament on the progress made so far,” affirmed Minister Sisulu.
