The return of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Expo 2012 to the AFB Waterkloof after a seven- year absence has helped the South African National Defence Force to further strengthen its military relations with international defence forces across the globe.

This was evident during the second day of the AAD Expo 2012, when the C SANDF Gen Solly Shoke, Secretary for Defence Dr Sam Gulube and C SA Army Lt Gen Vusi Masondo continued to receive senior international military and civilian counterparts from various countries who graced the five-day event.

Among the Defence Forces who graced the call at the AAD are the Tanzanian Defence Force whose Chief Army Maj Gen Salim Kijuu was accepted by C SA Army Lt Gen Vusi Masondo, Swaziland Defence Force, represented by its Chief of Staff Brig Gen Themba Dlamini, the Angolan Armed Forces by Chief of Angolan Army Gen Lucio Do Amaral as well as the Indonesian National Armed Forces whose Chief was represented by Col Victor Simatupang, the Military Attaché to SA. Dr Gulube hosted Mr Martin Rushwaya, Secretary for Defence in Zimbabwe. Since the beginning of the AAD Expo 2012, Gen Shoke has been receiving many Senior Military personnel from across the globe who
came to witness the annual defence exhibition.

Since the dawn of the democratic order in the Republic of South Africa and the formation of the SANDF in 1994, RSA has been a leading figure in rendering the peace support operations in the trouble torn countries through the United Nations and the African Union missions to create a safe and stable continent.

The SANDF is also a member of the SADC standby force which was formed in 2007 by the 14 during the SADC heads of states meeting in Lusaka, to be ready for rapid deployment in peacekeeping, humanitarian and natural disaster-relief efforts throughout Africa.

Among the Armed Forces within the 14 SADC countries currently enjoying good exchange programmes with the SANDF are the Tanzanian Defence Force, which has its members studying at the SANDF College.

The AAD Expo 2012 is the largest Defence Expo hosted between 19 to 23 September 2012 at the AFB Waterkloof, was aimed at showcasing the defence industry’s capability to provide the Department of Defence and in particular, the SANDF with a top of the range military hardware. It has attracted over 13 000 visitors since its inception on 19 September 2012.
