Budget Vote of the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, tabled her Defence Budget Vote in the Old Assembly Chamber in Parliament in Cape Town on 23 May 2013 held.

The Minister praised the heroes and heroines of the Central African Republic deployment and informed Members of Parliament of the allocation of R585 million for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Maritime Security Strategy. She also spoke of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) deployment which is due to commence in June 2013 and addressed the recent Military Skills Development System (MSDS) incident at Infantry School in Oudtshoorn, as well as the execution of planned departmental maintenance projects.

The Defence Budget Vote for the 2013/14 financial year amounts to R40,243 billion, which is equal to 1.1 per cent of Gross Domestic Project (GDP) and 3.8 per cent of total government expenditure.

After completing her Budget Vote in Parliament Minister Mapisa-Nqakula held a dinner at the Castle of Good Hope for her invited guests. The guests were met on arrival at the Castle by the Navy Marimba Band, while the Navy Band provided musical entertainment.
