The City of Johannesburg in partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) commemorated fallen soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in all wars, battles and armed struggles for freedom, democracy and peace in South Africa, including the Battle of Delville Wood in 1916 at the Cenotaph in Harrison Street, Johannesburg.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba was the main functionary at the event. Reverend Gift Moerane led the inter-faith religious service, followed by a solemn wreath-laying service. The Chief of Logistics, Lt Gen Morris Moadira, presided on behalf of the Chief of the SANDF. He was accompanied by senior officers from the Services and Divisions.

2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Delville Wood, one of the bloodiest battles fought on the Somme in France during World War 1.
