27 April marked a historical day in the life of our nation. Many South Africans, both black and white remember fondly standing for hours in long queues to cast a ballot in our country’s first democratic elections 23 years ago in 1994.

On Thursday, 27 April 2017, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in support of the Department of Arts and Culture joined South Africans in celebrating 23 years of freedom and democracy at Mhlabuyalingana in Manguzi, KwaZulu-Natal’s far north 15km south of the Mozambique-South Africa border near Kosi Bay.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “The year of OR Tambo: Together deepening democracy and building safer and crime-free communities”. It coincides with the centenary of the birth of our struggle stalwart Oliver Regionald Tambo, who was steadfast in his resolve for a liberated South Africa.
