Durban Hosts 46th SANDF Cricket Championship

Participation in sports is one way of instilling discipline and enhancing soldier’s performance in the battlefield. It allows soldiers to improve general fitness that is conducive to better health and contributes to the health related components, in this case preparing soldiers for combat operations. Apart from keeping your body healthy and revitalising your mind, sport has an amazing ability to build character, improve confidence and most importantly, bring people together. Durban as known, home of the Dolphins is a natural paradise known for its gorgeous coastline of sun-kissed beaches and subtropical climate, situated on the eastern seaboard of Africa. The City of Durban is an elegant, mature, ambitious and astonishingly liveable city, whether you are there as a business delegate or a leisure there is a warm African flavour that will capture your heart forever.

On Sunday, 03 December 2017 The SA National Defence Force Cricket Teams representing all arms of Services accompanied by other military fraternity and stakeholders braved the chilly morning to attend the inaugural SANDF Cricket National Championship in Durban despite unpredictable and unbearable weather condition of the City of Durban. It seemed nothing would keep them from participating with Cricket Teams from as far afield as Cape Town and Limpopo Provinces, Fans and supporting elements witnessed the championships matches regardless of the inconvenience caused by unfavourable weather conditions. The 46th SANDF Cricket Championship was hosted by the Kwa Zulu Natal Military Sport Region in Durban between 03 – 08 December 2017. The event was co-hosted by the KZN Cricket Union (Dolphins Cricket Franchise) under the auspices of Cricket South Africa.

On his address as Patron of the SANDF Cricket, Brig Gen Remsis Nkosi said “This is the first time that the SANDF Cricket National Championship contests for the first time in Services format. It is indeed an honour for me as a Patron of this professional sport code, to be part of this auspicious occasion and witness the history in the making. This championship is labelled “The Green Battle of the Services” however SA Military Health Services could not make it to be with us”. Brig Gen Nkosi further thanked pioneers of the successes reaped today and the stakeholders for their continued support amidst the volatile economic conditions.

The President and the chairperson of the SANDF Cricket Association, Lt Col Randall Williams said “Six (6) years has rapidly passed since the SANDF Cricket was afforded opportunity to have made a cricket development footprint in Durban. SANDF Cricket remains committed to the enhancement of the SANDF mandate, and directs its cricket development operations towards improving the general fitness and skill sets of its members.” At the end of the SANDF Cricket Championship the effort of the players were also rewarded with trophies for the winning teams and runners up in each category. On 08 December 2017 the newly chosen SANDF Cricket Team will be playing on February 2018 at Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.
